About Gymnastics:
Compulsories: Pre-designed routines designating specific movements and skills required by all gymnasts.
Optionals: personally designed routines which show the gymnast's strong points, as well as fulfilling general requirements.
GBD has 3 gymnasts competing at the optional level 7 this season. They have qualified for the Oregon State Championships! They workout 5 nights a week. Some days, even before school. What amazing dedication and commitment, from them and their families!
You go girls!

Don't forget why you brought your child to gymnastics class in the first place ...
Gymnastics by Design,
"Its more than just a sport"
Part five of six
5. Offer Rewards Carefully (if at all). Treats for practice don't create real motivation, the drive to develop a talent just for the love of the activity. A better alternative: Occasionally provide a treat after the practice, spontaneously. This way, the good feeling of an ice cream cone is connected with the practice, but the student didn't work through the practice thinking that she was getting paid for it.
Has your child hit a frustrating plateau? In that case, a rewards program might get him over a tough hurdle, says Virginia Shiller, Ph.D, psychologist and author of Rewards for Kids. A rewards plan in this case should have some flexibility to it-for instance, a requirement that the child practice his hook shot, his curve ball, or whatever his interest might be for, say, 21 days out of 30. Chart the progress on a check-off sheet. Link the reward to the effort made, not to improvement of the skill.
Rewarding kids with money or treats for practice can and more than not, does backfire, so help them focus more on the motivation than the compensation.
To be continued ... (one more part)
We have had several requests to re-run this article.
